On February 13, 2017, South River passed resolution 2017-106, authorizing the borough to apply for registration to become a member of Sustainable Jersey, a nonprofit organization providing tools, training, and financial incentives to support communities as they pursue programs that improve quality of life, save taxpayers money, and makes our borough a more sustainable and environmentally friendly place to live.
One of the first tasks of boroughs joining the program is for them to create a commission to oversee the progress of obtaining Sustainable Jersey certification. On March 27, 2017, the borough amended its code to add a “Green Team” empowered to oversee this program.
Sustainable Jersey provides “actions” that member communities must complete in order to obtain different certification status. This status determines access to certain grants and resources and puts the borough on a path towards a stronger future.
While voting members to the Green Team are appointed to this commission, obtaining the goals of Sustainable Jersey requires the coordination of a variety of commissions. The Green Team is responsible for identifying challenges, developing plans of action, and implementing those plans in coordination with other departments and commissions and with the advice and consent of the governing body.
This commission is in its infancy. Thus, as progress is made, additional information will be available to reflect these changes.
