(9/10/2026) South River Historical & Preservation Society's next program takes place at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, September 23rd at the South River Museum (64-66 Main Street). Josephine Marchetta will present an event-based history of the Middlesex County Courthouse in New Brunswick. A lifelong resident of the city with deep ties to the community, Marchetta's 28 year tenure as the assignment clerk at the courthouse has inspired her to learn about its past and given her a front row seat and a unique perspective on its recent history. SRH&PS Program

(6/12/2026) South River Historical & Preservation Society's next program takes place at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, June 24th at the South River Museum (64-66 Main Street). On the evening of September 7th, 1934, passengers aboard the SS Morro Castle anticipated a night of fine dining at the Captain's Dinner. It would be their last happy memory of the voyage. Within hours, a series of disasters struck and the liner crashed into the Asbury Park shoreline. Sarah Blake, author of Hushed Up History, will tell of the ship's final chapter - a tragedy laced with malice, mystery, and possibly murder. The program is free to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

(4/10/2026) The South River Police Department is reminding residents about the Middlesex County Special Needs Registry, now known as National Public Safety Alliance for Individuals with Disabilities (NPS-AID). A joint effort between the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office and the South River Police Department, this free voluntary program provides useful information to first responders in order to better assist those with a mental or physical disability during an emergency or police encounter. Junior Police Academy

(4/9/2026) Save the date! The South River Police Department's 17th annual Junior Police Academy will be held August 24th - August 28th. This program is free of charge and open to all residents of South River scheduled to attend 6th, 7th, or 8th grade in the fall of 2026. Registration info and details coming soon!

(4/1/2026) Adopt a Pet, based in Freehold, NJ, is an organization that rescues dogs from puppy mills in Lancaster, PA and other locations. These dogs are typically destroyed if they no longer produce healthy litters or if they are in need of medical attention. All rescued dogs are bathed, vetted, spayed or neutered, and fostered in homes while they await adoption. Adopt a Pet does not have a shelter and is looking for donations of clean towels and Pedigree dry or canned dog food. (3/27/2026) TNR is a humane and effective way to manage and care for the community cats. South River’s TNR program can’t run without the help of dedicated volunteers! There are many ways to get involved - trapping, transporting cats to and from veterinary appointments, helping with feeding, or assisting with recovery care. Whether you are experienced or brand new, your help is welcome. Even just a few hours of your time can make a big difference. SRPD Holiday Angel Tree

(11/17/2025) The South River Police Department is partnering with the South River Council of Congregations to bring a Holiday Angel Tree to South River. This is the perfect opportunity to make a less fortunate child's holiday season a little brighter. Interested in helping? simply visit the tree in the lobby of Police Headquarters (61 Main Street), select a gift recipient of your choice from the tree, shop for the child based on their preferences, then drop the gift(s) off by December 3rd. The South River Police Department will then arrange to have the child receive the gift(s) from Santa! SRH&PS Annual Meeting & Program

(11/12/2025) The South River Historical & Preservation Society will hold its annual meeting and program at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, November 19th at the South River Museum (64-66 Main Street). This year’s annual meeting will feature films of the 1931 and 1952 parades and activities at the South River Public School fields. The films will feature familiar figures like Coach John Fitzpatrick and Willett School principal Chester Zdrodowski. A question and answer session will round out the evening. The program is free to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

(10/24/2025) On Tuesday, October 28th, a contractor working on behalf of Middlesex County will begin work to remove old trolley tracks under the pavement on Main Street (Middlesex County Route 535). The removal is necessary due to the track structure deteriorating and causing problems with the road surface. The project also includes sidewalk and ADA ramp construction as well as milling and paving. Work will be taking place on weekdays between 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM and is anticipated to last approximately 300 working days.

Rohna Classified documentary filmmaker Jack Ballo will show his film about the 1943 sinking of the HMT Rohna, and ill-equipped World War II transport ship. Joseph J. Pisinski, South River High School Class of 1939, and 1,014 other U.S. soldiers were killed. Classified for more than 50 years, the largely forgotten event has now been revealed. The viewing of the film will take approximately 1.5 hours. The program is free to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

New Lead Paint Testing Requirement

(8/18/2025) The State of New Jersey's new Lead Safe law requires inspection of certain rental properties. For more information, view the Lead Paint Testing Notice (PDF).

Please note that this notice was sent to property owners by a vendor partnering with the Borough of South River, providing a flat rate and automatic state document filing. Property owners may use any certified lead paint inspection company. Property owners who elect to use alternate companies assume full responsibility for ensuring all documentation and payments are submitted in accordance with state and local requirements by the deadline.

SRH&PS Presentation

(4/4/2025) South River Historical & Preservation Society's next presentation takes place at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, April 23rd at the South River Museum (64-66 Main Street). Historian and former society president Brian Armstrong will provide a presentation based on his book, Cordova Elopement Scandal. The book recalls the story of the May 1904 elopement of the Reverend J. Frank Cordova, a Mexican-born married Methodist Episcopal minister, and Julia Bowne, a 25-year-old choir girl and popular “belle of South River.” The story was an international media sensation known as far away as Japan and Australia. Cordova was called the “Jersey Lothario” and was so famous that his wax figure was included in a popular New York City wax museum. The program is free to the public. SRH&PS Walking Tour

(4/4/2025) South River Historical & Preservation Society's next walking tour takes place at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 26th beginning at the South River Museum (64-66 Main Street). Following on his April 23 presentation at the South River Museum, Brian Armstrong, author of the recently published Cordova Elopement Scandal, will lead a walking tour showcasing the surviving houses, buildings, and locations associated with the 1904 South River scandal that became an international media sensation. Among the locations to be featured are what were then the Methodist Episcopal parsonage, Conklin Methodist Episcopal Church, the George Farr house, and the Bowne house, as well as the Old School Baptist graveyard. SRPD Holiday Angel Tree

(11/20/2024) The South River Police Department is partnering with the South River Council of Congregations to bring a Holiday Angel Tree to South River. This is the perfect opportunity to make a less fortunate child's holiday season a little brighter. Interested in helping? simply visit the tree in the lobby of Police Headquarters (61 Main Street), select a gift recipient of your choice from the tree, shop for the child based on their preferences, then drop the gift(s) off by December 13th. The South River Police Department will then arrange to have the child receive the gift(s) from Santa! Grekoski Park Inclusive Playground

(11/1/2024) The Borough is excited to announce receipt of a grant in the amount of $554,250 from the NJDEP Green Acres Program and $79,000 from the NJDCA Local Recreational Improvement Program. The project includes replacement of an existing playground with a Completely Inclusive Playground at Grekoski Park, 375 Whitehead Avenue. The proposed improvements include a completely inclusive playground with new safety surfacing and play structures with ramps. The Borough also proposes to renovate the existing restroom facility, add benches, fencing, and a gazebo to support the playground. These improvements will ensure all children have access to playgrounds and recreational amenities, regardless of their physical abilities or neurodiversity. (9/17/2024) The South River Historical & Preservation Society will hold its September meeting at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, September 25th at the South River Museum (64-66 Main Street). Please join us as Middlesex County historian Mark Nonestied provides an illustrated talk about the ground penetrating radar survey of Washington Monumental Cemetery and the impact of the 1918 influenza pandemic on our area. A joint effort between the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office and the South River Police Department, this free voluntary program provides useful information to first responders in order to better assist those with a mental or physical disability during an emergency or police encounter. Junior Police Academy

(3/11/2022) Save the date! The South River Police Department's 13th annual Junior Police Academy will be held June 27th - July 1st. Plastic Bag Ban

(2/25/2022) New Jersey's plastic bag ban goes into effect on May 4th. South River residents can receive three (3) reusable South River grocery bags from the South River Department of Public Works.
